Under the authority of the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, we are a formed FSC dedicated to educating and preparing our community in order to avoid devastating fires.

This June, the Rancho Helix de Oro Fire Safe Council (FSC) was pleased to participate at the Grossmont Mt Helix Improvement Association (GMIA) annual dinner by distributing important fire safety literature and chatting with GMIA members. Chief Andy Lawler from the San Miguel Fire & Rescue made a presentation informing the Grossmont-Mt. Helix community on measures to protect and defend their homes in the event of a wildfire.

Actions to date:
The Rancho Helix de Oro Fire Safe Council was founded in 2019 under the authority of the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County with the mission of educating and preparing our community to help avoid devastating fires.
With the help of a grant from SDGE in 2020, we produced educational materials with fire wise tips, an evacuation preparedness map, fire and emergency resources. A comprehensive brochure was sent out to 7,000 Grossmont-Mt Helix Improvement Association (GMIA)members. The Rancho Helix de Oro FSC has been actively promoting fire safety recommendations and information at community events in the GMIA area and we plan to expand to events in the Valle de Oro Planning Group area neighborhoods and Casa de Oro.
This year (2025) we are pleased to announce that the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation helped us obtain a generous grant from San Diego River Conservancy which we plan to use for the production of evacuation and fire safe brochures. The funds will also be used to improve our FSC booth at community events with the use of banners and other presentation materials
Support:
San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, Grossmont-Mt. Helix Improvement Association, Valle de Oro Planning Group, Casa De Oro Alliance, and community members.
Collaboration:
Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, San Diego Regional Fire Foundation, San Miguel Fire and Rescue, Cal Fire, San Diego County Sheriff, San Diego Gas & Electric, San Diego River Conservancy.
Volunteers: Our area FSC is managed entirely by neighborhood volunteers. The need to prepare for the dangers of our dry and hot climate means that efforts by volunteers are essential for the safety of our communities. If each neighbor maintains safe landscaping and gardening practices; harden our homes as best we can, we’ll have a better chance to protect our community. Our work is primarily to inform and educate our neighbors about fire safe practices at community events through personal, social and print media.
